During software-based engine optimization, the tolerance limits of the engine electronics are fully exploited – among experts, this is also commonly referred to as map optimization. Vehicle manufacturers intentionally allow for a certain degree of flexibility here so that a model can be adapted to country-specific regulations – e.g., regarding fuel, emissions, and insurance classes. Some engines are artificially derated in their performance to justify the price level compared to the next higher class. Protection functions of the original control unit, such as exhaust gas temperature regulation, remain intact.
